Nicky is afraid that his friends will not accept him because of his new reading glasses. By talking to his peers on the way to school, he discovers the beauty of diversity and realizes that our diversity is actually our strength.

This is a great story to help children understand diversity and learn to accept and value the differences of others and ourselves. The genre of the story is realistic fiction.
ReplyDeleteActivities I would do to expand on this book:
Have children draw a self-portrait and write what they like best about themselves. And display these in the classroom.
Discuss ways we can be kind to others and why that is important.
"Our Diversity Makes Us Stronger" is a fiction story targeted for younger children as it includes charming rhymes and illustrations. As teaching diversity to young children at an early age is crucial, this book makes it easier to deliver it. This story is also great as it is told from the child’s perspective and how he does not like how he looks. But after receiving a complement from another child he learns to like his glasses. Showing children that we may all be different, but it is okay.
ReplyDeleteThe illustrations help children see how they could all have something different and still be friends and happy. The cartoon illustrations with all the vivid colors draw the children to see all they can do with others and still have different things.
Activities that could be used with this book are to create a self-portrait of themselves and present to class. This would allow them to share their differences they do not like and get compliments from others. This helps everyone's self-esteem boost up even more and proudly accept their differences. Another activity would be arts and crafts, having each child express how they feel when others see the difference they have. This would allow the other children to visually see and listen to how the child feels when it is noticed.
