Folktale: Snow White

Image
" Snow White " is a German  f airy tale , first written down in the early 19th Century, and now known widely across the world.  The Brothers Grimm  published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection. You could do a compare and contrast with about good vs. evil.

Nursery Rhymes: Three Little Pigs

Image
"The Three Little Pigs" is a fable about three pigs who build their houses of different materials. A Big Bad Wolf blows down the first two pigs' houses which are made of straw and sticks respectively, but is unable to destroy the third pig's house which is made of bricks.  The Three Little Pigs is known as Fable. The printed version of this fable dates back to 1840, but the story is much older. This fable has many versions of it.  An activity you could do with this fable would be to divide your students into groups they could do a play about what you just read to them. I know my Kinder and 1st-grade students love this.

Science Fiction:How to Catch a Dragon by Adam Wallace and Illustrator by Andy Elkerton

Image
From the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling How to Catch series comes an all-new dragon story, a great Chinese New Year book for kids! Do you have what it takes to snag a dragon? The How to Catch kids are off again, chasing a   dragon as they chase through Chinese New Year celebrations! Set in China during the Spring Festival, otherwise known as Chinese New Year, the wily dragon will have to avoid trap after trap as the kids run through paper lanterns, red lunar envelopes, fireworks, and more! An activity I have done as we study Chinese New Year is making dragon puppets, which my kindergartner class loves making.

Injured magical animals come to their backyard barn for help!  With magical animals, science, mystery, and adventure -- the brand-new series Zoey and Sassafras has something for everyone! An activity I would do with this book even the series of books this author has made would be a book club. You could meet with your students once a week and they read a chapter or so many pages then after you could have them answer questions or even have a good meeting where the discuss what they read.
