Historical Fiction: The Tower of Life

Image
B y Chana Stiefel, illustrated by Susan Gal.   Yaffa loved her family and her town in Poland, but when the Nazis invaded, her family escaped with nothing except a few photos. Later in her life, she was asked to build an exhibit for the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. She used her own photographs as inspiration and found other photos from her Jewish neighbors who used to live in Eishyshok , too. The photographs show life, family, love, and community. An activity I would do is have students capture their own life by bringing in pictures from their homes town or maybe where their grandparents came from.

Realistic Fiction: Between Us and Abuela

Image
This book was published in September 2019, Written By; Perkins, Mitali and Illustrated by Palacios, Sara. The level for this book would be good for K-3. It is about a little girl who travels with her mother and brother on Christmas to spend a short visit with her grandmother, on the fenced border between California and Mexico. Young Maria plans a clever way to deliver an oversized gift that will not fit through the fence slats.  An activity you can do is have your students come up with their own way to deliver oversize gifts.
